Description
Sketch by Adalbert Volck for the Wednesday Club's production of the Thomas (i.e. , William) Barnes Rhodes burlesque drama , Bombastes Furioso . In this illustration , the lavishly dressed Distaffina sits in a chair next to a spinning wheel with her arm resting on the back of the chair . She holds a book in one hand and looks over her shoulder toward the figure of General Bombastes Furioso . Furioso is dressed in a general's military suit with Jack boots , a sword and sash , and a general's hat with an elaborate plume . He has just come from the palace , where King Artaxominous has named him the Duke of Strombelo for his victory over the King's foe . Furioso is about to discover that his beloved Distaffina has been untrue to him by accepting the King's proposal of marriage . The part of Distaffina according to the George McCullough Anderson's book , The Work of Adalbert Johann Volck 1828 - 1912 , was played by a Mr . J . M . Brown .
