Description
Map of the Duchy of Schleswig , a Danish fief . The upper half is still in Denmark , the lower half reaching to Kiel , Rendsburg and Tonningen now in Germany . Also showing the North-Frisian islands (Sylt , etc.) . Dating de Wit's atlases and city map books is difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years . After the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson publishing houses , Frederick de Wit firm (father , son and grandson) gained a well deserved reputation for the quality of their mapmaking in the seventeenth century . The father managed to acquire a large number of copper plates at auctions and with these he was able to cover almost every type of cartography : nautical charts , world atlases , books of town plans and panoramas and large scale wall maps . This map probably made part of "Atlas Maior " by Frederic de Witt , the son . Published in Amsterdam . Text in Latin .
