Description
The Jug Bridge across the Monocacy River east of Frederick was built by a local mason , Leonard Harbaugh , in 1808 for the cost of $55,000 . It was a 65 foot (20 meters) stone arch bridge that took its name from a stone monument in a shape of jug , or demijohn , at its east end . It was built for the National Road and to assist farmers to bring their goods to market , but it also was used by Civil War troops , and later by automobiles . It collapsed on March 3 , 1942 , and was replaced by another bridge . The jug monument was moved to it's present location at East Patrick Street and Bowman Road in 1965 .
