Description
Photograph taken looking at the burnt district northeast of Liberty and German Streets . In the left foreground beyond the rubble of many small businesses are the ruins of the Hopkins Place Savings Bank . Designed by Baldwin and Pennington and built of fireproof materials in 1893 , this bank building , though damaged , survived the fire but not the renewal (see editor’s note below) . In the distant background are (from left to right) several other structures that, though burned , survived the fire : the eleven-story Union Trust Building , the seven-story Herald Building (note the slogan "Herald Wants Bring Results " painted on its side wall) , the twelve-story Calvert Building , the seven-story Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company Building , the ten-story Equitable Building (behind Calvert Building) , the seven-story Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Central Headquarters Building , the sixteen-story Continental Trust Building (tallest structure) , and the ten-story Maryland Trust Building . All survived the fire because of fireproof materials used in their construction .(Editor's note : The Hopkins Place Savings Bank Building sustained only 15 percent damage but was eventually demolished . Baltimore's narrow streets had hindered efforts to fight the fire , so afterward the City of Baltimore decided to widen its streets , thus the damaged structure had to be removed to make way for a new building at the same site.)
