My good Lord, The deputy Governor of Bermudas Mr. Withers & Mr. Gardner a merchant one of the Asistants have been this two monthes Sutors to mee for Land & to transport into my Province 500 from the Bermudas w[hi]ch is overpeopled & Captayne Mathews of Virginia also to have 10000 Ac[res] & is to transport thence Cattell & 100 men, C[apt]. Cleyborne hath been very earnest to have the like 10000 Ac[res] & to transport 100 men of his partners & to Set down in the very triangular point of New England Maryland & New Albion neere 40 degrees, & have beene very earnest to have had a Copy of my Patent finding Some defect in your Lordships. I havinge hitherunto delayed them I find the Bermudas men have moved his maty [Majesty] by my Lord of Dorsett, & hath graunted theyr Sute to have a Graunt but as a Corporation of themselves distinct from Virginia & of all ye River of Rapahannock with Cinquack & Pawtomeck Land & River on the South or Kings side & with all such Privileges & Regalities as the Patent of Florida to Sir Robbert Heath, Maryland & mine of New Albion hath But with this Proviso it is graunted t[ha]t if Maryland and New Albion Patents bee recalled & resumed then theyrs also must cease. I conceive that the Bermuda men C[apt]. Mathews C[apt]. Cleyborne & his friends & manny other discontents of Virginia joyne together in this new Graunt & doe intend to set downe in Patowemeck at least 1500 men together speedily; I have urged that[?] our Provinces are Principalities & County Palatines Exempt with all Regalities fit for men of Honor & wi[th] a monarchichall Government not fit for a meane Corporattion; & have urged that[?] the River of Pawtomeck & the shore on the South side is your Lordships & that[?] they cannot touch y[ou]r land nor trade or sayle that[?] river but to wrong your Lor[dshi]p, that[?] your Lor[dshi]p as Ireland Payeth Customes, may Search Comand & impose customes on all entringe that[?] river; & by theyr cominge your Lordship shall loose the trade of 2000 Indians of that river worth 3000₤ at least & by theyr faction & great power may have the Indians animated towards & surprise yours unfortified & the difference of relligion will breed jelousy & the bounds, wars. And that if theyr Graunted land bee more healthy than Virginia & have also more liberties and Regalities, this will draw Virginia men to run thither & Servants to run from theyr masters; & so both Virginia men and your Lord[shi]p have just cause to oppose this graunt, & the dannger of so bad neighbours, wishing them that they[?] will goe on then to leave out our Palatine Regalities, & to Set downe in Rapahannock; & to delay them from proceadinge, which they cannot without copy of my Patent as yet it being not heere inrolled; I do beate & intertayne them; Untill I heare

Description | Holograph letter dated August 30, 1639 from Sir Edmond Plowden, governor and captain-general of the English colony of New Albion, to Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, proprietor of the English colony of Maryland. In this letter Plowden brings to Lord Baltimore's attention a breach by a third party of the boundaries previously established for New Albion and for Maryland, calling on Lord Baltimore to help combat this threat. |
